Five Years Later: How Blair’s Father Continues Her Legacy

Mike Henry, Director of Advocacy at the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, remains deeply committed to honoring the legacy of his daughter, Blair “BB” Henry, who passed away from pediatric brain cancer five years ago. Blair’s journey continues to inspire Mike’s unwavering commitment to addressing this urgent public health crisis. In this letter, written five years after her passing, Mike reflects on how her memory fuels his advocacy efforts, offering hope to families navigating similar challenges.

Five years. Blair left us today, five years ago. Some days, it feels longer; others, like yesterday. Many of you didn’t get the chance to meet my daughter. If you did, you would have seen that she was silly and stubborn. She loved her nurses and scared the young residents. She liked eating new foods and loved whipped cream. She was so bright and curious. She was three, but she acted like a teenager. She was the most courageous person I will ever meet. She is the first thing I think about every day. I know that will never change.

Her death was a clarifying event. For Kate, Danny, and me, it showed us the strength of our community and who we could count on to show up. We were so blessed to have many families and friends who wrapped their arms around us during our best and worst moments.

Our community is rare. As part of my role with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, I have met many people without that support. I see patients looking for a reprieve from harsh treatments. I see mothers and fathers struggling to find someone to talk to or worrying about when the next bill is coming. I see researchers who have dedicated their lives to finding a cure for our children have their resources pulled and their value questioned.

Kate and I chose to start Blair’s Fund with PBTF because we share the same mission—to support kids like Blair and families like ours. Today, on her anniversary, I’m inviting you to become a partner in building her legacy. Please consider donating to Blair’s Fund so that we can be that community for our families.
